Photo Gallery: Chakana: Andean ceremony in the city streets

The Chakana is an indigenous ceremony which marks the astronomical formation of a perfect cross (the "chakana," aka the Southern Cross) in the sky during the month of May. The cross itself is full of symbolism for the Andean people- male-female, energy-matter, time-space, up-down - with May 3rd regarded as the official "Dia de la Chakana." The celebration is gaining strength in Santiago, where various dance schools, collectives and the indigenous community bring, display and celebrate their Andean culture.
