Formerly practiced by new age folk and supermodels only, yoga has recently become popular among groups of people looking to reap the mental, emotional and physical benefits of its practice.

Despite the evidence that continued yoga practice can prevent or even cure physical and mental ailments, some are still skeptical. With an image of the granola-munching yogi in their heads, these naysayers would much rather sweat it out on a run than sit in a room full of strangers donning elastic yoga pants, chanting and doing stretch poses.

In an attempt to dispel this stereotype, the Academia Chilena de Yoga has created Project Yoga Luka. Their goal is simple – to spread the practice of yoga and increase access to a greater number of people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it by offering excellent, ninety-minute classes for a mere luka (the Chilean Spanish equivalent of the U.S. buck or English quid) or CP$1,000 (US$ 2.00).

Over eight affiliated locations throughout Santiago offer Hatha Yoga classes, a system of yoga primarily used for mental and physical health. The classes, ranging from beginner to advanced, are taught by knowledgeable instructors with at least four years of experience under their belt. They also offer classes for pregnant women and children.

you will find a diverse crowd of Santiaguinos— women and men, young and old, of different shapes and sizes. The studio is spacious and clean and all the equipment is provided, a far cry from the exclusive (and expensive) classes offered elsewhere in Santiago.

Classes begin with relaxation exercises to focus on posture and breathing and then run you through poses to target every muscle imaginable. Each session ends with an extended meditation session, leaving you feeling mentally and physically rejuvenated and ready to sign up for the next class.
