Best things to do this weekend in Santiago (Aug 28 - 30)

Welcome to the Weekend Guide! The weather might be a bit gloomy right now but keep your head up because we have an excellent selection of events lined up for you this weekend. The Santiago International Film Festival, World Press Photo, Thelonious Jazz Festival, America Indigena Festival, Revolver-favorite gypsy-cumbia party band Banda Conmocion at Fonda Permanente, miniature theater, Ana Tijoux, ska parties, cueca outings, live tango, even a pole-dancing championship. And if you're feeling a bit more adventurous, there are some interesting things going on in Barrio Yungay and the Población Lo Hermida worth checking out.

  • SANFIC: The 11th edition of the Santiago International Film Festival SANFIC officially kicked off on Tuesday and will run through Sunday. It's a perfect opportunity to catch some excellent films being shown this year, including eleven world premieres, 96 films from over 20 countries, and award winners from festivals such as Cannes, Berlin and Sundance.   • World Press Photo: This is your final weekend to check out the world-popular traveling photo exhibit! After Europe, USA, Australia and India, this exhibition of breathtaking pictures has been on display in Santiago since July 31 and will end this Sunday. FREE. Friday: 10am-20pm.   • Festival Interdisciplina: Theater, dance, artistic performances and live music all come together in a multi-disciplinary festival organized by the students of the Faculty of Arts of the Universidad de Chile.   • Nacer: Under the writing and direction of Diego Agurto Beroiza, the play explores the problems of impoverishment of labor, the reproducibility of the human body and the power that medicine has over the bodies. The work invites us to take a look at a reflection on the current economic system and how it affects the relationship between the bodies.

  • La Noche de los Pelícanos: The play tells the story of a mayor and her assistant, in the midst of absolute crisis of the Municipality of San Antonio. They are in search of a way to recover the lost votes to be able to win reelection. A junior student offers an idea to organize the biggest carnival in the region: Night of the pelicans. The project becomes the perfect solution to clean the image of the candidate, but her only source of funding is in the hands of the most dangerous drug lord of the central coast, a situation that will force an exchange that will take her desire of power to the limits of a senseless tragedy.

  • Inocentes: "Innocents" is the adaptation of the play "Victims and Perpetrators" by the German playwright Thomas Jonigk.
    The play is about family pedophilia and features two teenagers in a playground with no time or space, just a blank surface where they develop endless memories under the sarcastic look of others. The teens play with different characters, developing them to great lengths and crudely exposing the sexual abuse they suffered from their parents.

  • Gemelas: "Gemelas" or "Twins" is an entertaining comedy that shows the inner world of television through completely opposite minds. Based on the Uruguayan comedy by Alfredo Leiros, "Gemelas" promises 60 minutes of laughter under the direction of Gustavo Becerra.

  • Feria Plaza Yungay: Plaza Yungay will transform itself into an open flea market this Sunday! Sell, buy and exchange new or second hand "stuff" (read: all kinds of random items). Also known as miniature theater, 15 'boxes' are going to be set up at the Plaza Libertad De Prensa starting at 3pm.
