Best things to do this weekend in Santiago (May 15 - 17)

Looks like the weather's going to be pretty decent the next few days so do whatever you can to head out and enjoy the city before things get a bit too chilly. This weekend we've lined up a pretty diverse set of picks - there's a food fair happening at Estación Mapocho, a major swing dancing event by our friends from Swingtiago, art openings, a huge gay-rights march Saturday afternoon, a dance festival in La Reina, book launches, cueca parties, hip-hop performances, opera at the Teatro Municipal and so much more.

Remember every Friday we'll post our picks for the weekend and please check this space often as we may update it with changes and/or new events that pop up. Enjoy!

  • Donde No Habito: Interesting installation over at Galeria Metropolitana which deals with colonialism and Mapuche gender and identity issues that have been historically denied. Includes a video titled "You will never be a weye" and features the artist dressed up "Mapuche clothes" bought at a cheap local market.

  • Fanzinoteca Espigadoras: Drop by the MAC to check out this exhibit on Fanzines - yeah zines! Collected from throughout South America, Europe and the US, the zines cover everything from fiction, music, counterculture and the underground. The MAC is open Tuesday through Sunday.

  • La vida es una prision: Last chance to catch this interesting looking musical! Inmates from different prisons are brought together to an experimental "Model Prison" created by the government to distract from corruption scandals. Drug dealers, prostitutes, assassins, sadomasochist guards together where "everything appears so, but isn't, and where everything is, but isn't true."

  • Fragmentos de un gavilán: Violeta Parra once had an idea for a folkloric ballet performance called "El Gavilán" which was never fully realized. The dance company Danza en Cruz has taken the beginning and final segments of this original idea and created a dance performance that takes the viewer on a trip through Violeta's imagination.
